I was reading through the book of Jude this morning and saw for the first time what Jude was really writing about in his letter. It laid super heavy on my heart as I’d never contemplated what he was actually talking about in his letter, so I thought I’d review these thoughts and actions that have crept into our church these last two decades, especially this last one, that seem to fulfill the prophecy of the book of Jude, which he identifies as “ungodly persons who turn the grace of our God into licentiousness” Jude 1:4
“4 For certain persons have crept in unnoticed, those who were long beforehand [d]marked out for this condemnation, ungodly persons who turn the grace of our God into licentiousness and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.” Jude 1:4
Who are those persons who have crept into our churches unnoticed, as identified specifically by Jude? These are those who abuse the grace of God, living a life of sin, but what sin? Before we discuss that, Jude, as an example of what he will be discussing, references the angels who abandoned their natural stations as identified in the book of Genesis, so these are the angels who pursued the unnatural. Angels were not designed for procreation as they were designed for God’s service in celibacy.
6 And angels who did not keep their own domain, but abandoned their proper abode, He has kept in eternal bonds under darkness for the judgment of the great day,” Jude 1:6
Who were the angels that left their own domain, abandoning the proper, and because of this, have been kept in chains in darkness awaiting their time of release by God? These were 200 angels who made a pack with one another to sleep with women on the earth in the days of Noah (see previous post) and have children by them. The children were abominations to God, half-breeds; half-human, half-angel. They were called Nephilim, were giants on the earth, and had super human strength and size, some up to 37′ tall. Fortunately, they were not immortal as angels, but were mortal as humans, and so were able to be killed. We see Israel’s pursuit to annihilate these nations as commanded by God when we read the wars in the Old Testament.
“Now it came about, when men began to multiply on the face of the land, and daughters were born to them, 2 that the sons of God [the 200 fallen angels] saw that the daughters of men were [a]beautiful; and they took wives for themselves, whomever they chose. 3 Then the Lord said, “My Spirit shall not [b]strive with man forever, [c]because he also is flesh; [d]nevertheless his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.” 4 The Nephilim [giants, half-breeds] were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God [fallen angels] came in to the daughters of men, and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.” Genesis 6:1-4
As it says in Jude, these fallen angels will be released during the Great Tribulation, the Judgement, as they will be used as weapons of judgement on fallen man, and their end will follow with judgement on themselves, in the lake of fire.
“Then the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star from heaven which had fallen to the earth; and the key of the [a]bottomless pit was given to him. 2 He opened the [b]bottomless pit, and smoke went up out of the pit, like the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by the smoke of the pit. 3 Then out of the smoke came locusts [c]upon the earth, and power was given them, as the scorpions of the earth have power.” Revelation 9:1-3
Now that we have clarified the end of these angels who abandoned the proper, the next thing Jude talks about is the historical fate of those who were rescued out of Egypt, yet did not believe in upholding God’s Commands. God destroyed them because they followed after their own fallen passions, the improper, and not what God had designed or commanded.
“5 Now I desire to remind you, though you know all things once for all, that [e]the Lord, after saving a people out of the land of Egypt, [f]subsequently destroyed those who did not believe.” Jude 1:5
Why did God destroy Sodom and Gomorrah as an example for us? He destroyed them for their sexual sins, the defilement of the body.
“7 just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities around them, since they in the same way as these indulged in gross immorality and went after [g]strange flesh, are exhibited as an [h]example in undergoing the punishment of eternal fire.” Jude 1:7
- Gross immorality: ekporneuó: mid. to give oneself up to fornication, to go a whoring, ‘give oneself over to fornication’, seems to indicate a lust that gluts itself, satisfies itself completely
- Strange flesh: (héteros) sometimes refers to “another” of a different class group or type, strange, different, as opposed to some former person or thing, emphasizes it is qualitatively different from its counterpart (comparison).
Their unnatural, sexual sin engulfed them. They not only sinned in their mind by dreaming of it, but they acted out on their desires. Their desires were not natural, like man and woman attraction. The attraction was unnatural, as men desired men, not as they had been designed by God, men with women. Because these followed their sinful passions, God says that they stained their souls, defiling them, or polluting them with sin. By following and acting on their unnatural attraction, God states that these people rejected His authority, and decided to follow their own ‘authority.’ Their end was total destruction from the earth as they were used as an example for future generations to show God’s outright rejection of their defiling ways. These men were the comparison to the angels who had sexual relations with women, the unnatural, or improper.
8 Yet in the same way these men, also by dreaming, defile the flesh, and reject authority, and revile [i]angelic majesties.” Jude 1:8
- Dreaming: (enypniázomai) in connection with the wrong kind of dreaming. This hoping (desiring) opposes God’s kingdom – and then expects such personal aspirations to be granted by Him! This shows someone is completely out of touch with the principles of God’s kingdom
- Defile the flesh: (miainousin) properly, to stain (with paint or dye); (figuratively) to stain (defile) the soul, i.e. like when sin taints by its polluting effects (“moral, spiritual stains”).
“10 But these men revile the things which they do not understand; and the things which they know by instinct, like unreasoning animals, by these things they are [j]destroyed. 11 Woe to them! For they have gone the way of Cain, and for pay [k]they have rushed headlong into the error of Balaam [an unrighteous prophet], and perished in the rebellion of Korah. 12 These are the men who are [l]hidden reefs [false teachers among you] in your love feasts when they feast with you without fear, caring for themselves [shepherding themselves only as in they are only looking out for their own desires]; clouds without water [God’s cloud lead the people, these are false leaders attempting to lead God’s people in this way, saying that it is correct], carried along by winds; autumn trees without fruit [They are not of God and do not produce the fruit of the Spirit], [m]doubly dead [They are both physically and spiritually dead], uprooted [they are apart from Jesus, the root]; 13 wild waves of the sea, casting up their own [n]shame like foam; wandering stars, for whom the [o]black darkness has been reserved forever.” Jude 1:10-13
Above, Jude states that these men knew that by instinct that women were made for men sexually, not men with men, yet they are like “unreasoning animals,” letting their unnatural passions for each other run rampant and uncontrolled, not able to be reasoned with. You could not tell them about reason, or common sense, because they were engulfed so much so in their sexual passions that they were not able to understand the truth of God’s Word, that men with men was not by design and unnatural. Because of their willful, rebellious sins that they had given themselves over to, and had attempted to lead others astray in their ‘truth,’ they were destroyed because they could not be brought back to the real truth of God’s Word. They were like wild beasts of the earth, unable to be tamed.
We see further clarification of Sodom’s great sins of homosexuality as the men of the city came to Lot’s house to forcefully take the visiting men (who were really angels) and have sex with them.
“4 Before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, surrounded the house, both young and old, all the people [b]from every quarter; 5 and they called to Lot and said to him, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us that we may [c]have [sexual] relations with them.” 6 But Lot went out to them at the doorway, and shut the door behind him, 7 and said, “Please, my brothers, do not act wickedly. ” Genesis 19:4-7
Continuing in Jude, we see that Enoch prophesied about not only the homosexual men during the times of Lot, but in the time when Jesus comes back in the future as well. For those engulfed in these sins, Jesus will be convicting them of their words and deeds, for they not only did these things, but they stated that it was God’s plan and will for them to be engulfed in them and pushed their agendas on others, even within the church.
14 It was also about these men that Enoch, in the seventh generation from Adam, prophesied, saying, “Behold, the Lord came with [p]many thousands of His holy ones [the holy ones are those who had been raptured, the bride of Christ], 15 to execute judgment upon all, and to convict all the ungodly of all their ungodly deeds which they have done in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him.” 16 These are grumblers, finding fault, following after their own lusts; [q]they speak arrogantly, flattering people for the sake of gaining an advantage.” Jude 1:14-16
But Jude gives us a warning about the times of the end. He reminds us of the destruction of Sodom and why it was so, and then he makes a correlation between these two periods of time. The period of time of Sodom will be like the time of the coming of Jesus Christ. The specific passion of homosexuality, as Jude has been calling out separately, will be rampant during this time. For those in homosexuality, they will be causing divisions among those in the church, persuading that their ways are correct and natural, but Jude warns that they are devoid of the Spirit and worldly-minded.
17 But you, beloved, ought to remember the words that were spoken beforehand by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ, 18 that they were saying to you, “In the last time there will be mockers, following after their own ungodly lusts.” 19 These are the ones who cause divisions, [r]worldly-minded, [s]devoid of the Spirit.” Jude 1:17-19
“26 And just as it happened in the days of Noah, so it will be also in the days of the Son of Man: 27 they were eating, they were drinking, they were marrying, they were being given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all. 28 [r]It was the same as happened in the days of Lot: they were eating, they were drinking, they were buying, they were selling, they were planting, they were building; 29 but on the day that Lot went out from Sodom it rained fire and [s]brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all. 30 It will be [t]just the same on the day that the Son of Man is revealed.” Luke 17:26-30
But remember, that we are to build ourselves up by our holy and pure faith, praying, and keeping ourselves centered on God’s Word, and not on these false teachers. But, have mercy on those who are questioning and doubting these sins and help them to see God’s truth, that it is an abomination to God. Hate the sin they are involved in or supporting, but attempt to rescue those who are caught in it or are in support of it. When we rescue those who are wavering and questioning, we will be rescuing them from their eternal destruction.
20 But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting anxiously for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to eternal life. 22 And have mercy on some, who are doubting; 23 save others, snatching them out of the fire; and on some have mercy with fear, hating even the garment polluted by the flesh.” Jude 1:20-23
Jesus Christ is able to keep us on the path of righteousness and to not fall into the sin of homosexuality or the promoting or supporting of it. He is able to keep us from it and to keep us blameless with great joy!
24 Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to make you stand in the presence of His glory blameless with great joy, 25 to the only God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion and authority, before all time and now and [t]forever. Amen.” Jude 1:24-25
I’ll reference a few other New Testament verses that also show that homosexuality is the sin discussed in Jude.
- 25 For they exchanged the truth of God for [a]a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed [b]forever. Amen.26 For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is [c]unnatural, 27 and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural function of the woman and burned in their desire toward one another, men with men committing [d]indecent acts and receiving in [e]their own persons the due penalty of their error.” Romans 1:26-27
- “8 On the contrary, you yourselves wrong and defraud. You do this even to your brethren. 9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor [a]effeminate, nor homosexuals, 10 nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God.” 1 Corinthians 6:8-10
- “9 realizing the fact that law is not made for a righteous person, but for those who are lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers 10 [a]and [b]immoral men [c]and homosexuals [d]and kidnappers [e]and liars [f]and perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound teaching, 11 according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, with which I have been entrusted.” 1 Timothy 1:9-11
Homosexuality is a sin defined by God and warned about by Jude as those headed for destruction, no matter what others might say or teach, for we see that the entire letter from Jude warns specifically about those engulfed in this specific type of sin. They are void of the Spirit of God, though some claim to be Christians. But, thankfully, no sin is too great for God to forgive and for those who are caught in this trap of Satan, they are also able to be redeemed from their destructive path, if only they will realize their error and come back to God for forgiveness through the love and blood of Jesus Christ. Some of us reading this today might have been previously engulfed in this sin, but if not, other sins may have engulfed your life. When you came to Jesus Christ and turned from those sins, all were washed away and you were made clean again. Praise Him for what He has done. If you are still engulfed in it, pray for God to cleanse your heart and mind and for Jesus’ blood to wash over you, and sin no more. Do not hate those in homosexuality, or any other sin, but rather remember from where you have come and show mercy on them that they might also turn from their sins and put their hope and trust in Jesus Christ. Pray that God might break through the grips of Satan on their lives.
“9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor [f]effeminate, nor homosexuals, 10 nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 Such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God.…15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I then take away the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? May it never be! 16 Or do you not know that the one who joins himself to a prostitute is one body with her? For He says, “The two shall become one flesh.” 17 But the one who joins himself to the Lord is one spirit with Him. 18 Flee immorality. Every other sin that a man commits is outside the body, but the [j]immoral man sins against his own body. 19 Or do you not know that your body is a [k]temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from [l]God, and that you are not your own? 20 For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.” 1 Corinthians 6:9-11, 15-20
Thank you, Father, for the ability to be forgiven by your son, Jesus Christ. Without Him, none could be forgiven as we have all fallen into various types of sins over our lives. You are able to forgive and wash away any sin, including the sins against the body which includes homosexuality, sexual relations outside of marriage, pornography, and adultery. For those we know today who are engulfed in any of these sexual sins, Father, we ask that you open their eyes before it is too late, to see how they have fallen. Restore them to you because you love them as your creation and want them to come back to you. In the restoring name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
“24 Now those who [k]belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also [l]walk by the Spirit. 26 Let us not become boastful, challenging one another, envying one another.” Galations 5:24-26
