Could The Moon Give Its Own Light?

There has been a debate on the Bible since the beginning of its origin.  Is the Bible to be taken literally or symbolically or both?  And, if you take it symbolically, when is it symbolic and when is it literal?  I tend to follow the line that the Bible is to be taken literally for the most part, so one of the questions I have is with the verses about the moon.

Since we began school, we’ve been taught that the sun is a star that gives light 93,000,000 miles a way and the moon is a perfectly round rock that reflects light, and is super close to us, but is this really true?  Can we believe everything that we’ve been taught in school?  Let’s look at Darwin’s Theory of Evolution, for example.  As a Bible believing Christian, you cannot believe in evolution as it is against God’s account of creation, so what else has science come up with as a theory that might not be true?

38 But God gives it a body as He pleases, and to each seed its own body. 39 All flesh is not the same flesh, but there is one kind of flesh[c] of men, another flesh of animals, another of fish, and another of birds.”  1 Corinthians 15:38-39  (Fish did not evolve into land animals, and land animals did not evolve into humans)

Let’s talk a bit about the moon today as a point of interest that will make you go hmmm…….

If we take Scripture literally and as fact, then we see that God seems to tell us that the sun, stars, and the moon give off their own light.  They seem to be the same and not differentiated in any way as far as a ‘light-giver.’  The moon is not spelled out separately to state that it is a reflector of light, as we’ve been taught, but rather compares it to the light of the sun and stars.

  • 14 Then God said, “Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years; 15 and let them be for lights in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth”; and it was so. 16 Then God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night. He made the stars also. 17 God set them in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth, 18 and to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 So the evening and the morning were the fourth day.”  Genesis 1:14-19
  • “When I put out your light, I will cover the heavens, and make its stars dark; I will cover the sun with a cloud, And the moon shall not give her light.”  Ezekiel 32:7
  • “For the stars of heaven and their constellations Will not give their light; The sun will be darkened in its going forth, And the moon will not cause its light to shine.”  Isaiah 13:10
  • “Moreover the light of the moon will be as the light of the sun, And the light of the sun will be sevenfold, As the light of seven days, In the day that the Lord binds up the bruise of His people And heals the stroke of their wound.”  Isaiah 30:26
  • “Thus says the Lord, Who gives the sun for a light by day, The ordinances of the moon and the stars for a light by night, Who disturbs the sea, And its waves roar (The Lord of hosts is His name):”  Jeremiah 31:35
  •  “Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.”  Matthew 24:29
  • “The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it. The Lamb is its light.”  Revelation 21:23
  • “If even the moon does not shine, And the stars are not pure in His sight,”  Job 25:5

As a photographer, I see light differently than most, as I’m keenly aware of light sources, their color temperatures, and reflective surfaces.  My eye is trained to see color casts of light as it hits subjects.  The sun always gives off a warmer color temperature… a more yellowish light (and yes, its color cast turns more yellow at dawn and dusk.)  You can see the difference of this when you compare it against a fluorescent light, for example, which is a more greenish tint, or a LED light which is more bluish.  The moon’s color temperature is a cool tone… a more blue cast.  If an object has light reflected on it, the object will pick up the color temperature of the light source hitting it.  For example, when I’m photographing a client who is outside surrounded by the green of trees and the green of the grass below, if the light bounces up from the grass onto their face, the color temperature will go to a green color.  Their skin will illuminate with a slightly green tint because of the light.  So, their skin will change from the natural skin tone to green.  This is why I use artificial light to light someone’s face when surrounded by green. I want their skin to be natural and not green.  Likewise, if the moon were a reflective object that reflects the light of the sun, the moon would take on the characteristics of the sun (the light source.)  It would reflect the warm, yellowish quality of the sun, and thus even at night, the moon would shine down as more of a warm, cream colored hue.  But in fact, this is not true.  The moon gives light that is a cool tone, on the blue scale (Go outside at night on a full moon without any lights on and you’ll notice the blue).  It is not possible for the sun’s warm rays to hit the moon and then be reflected as a blue tone.  This defies the natural laws of reflective surfaces.

Also, with being a photographer, I’m use to identifying light source directions and can easily tell when looking at a photograph where a light source (or sources) is coming from.  When you are to photograph a subject, the first thing you look for is the best lighting, or in other words, you study the light sources to get the best angles and shadows.  Shadows begin when a light source ends.  Light hits the side nearest the light source and then fades off into shadow.  The shadow angle is a fall off in proportion to the light angle.  Both angles match.  When we study the moon as a potential reflective source and we attempt to use the light source of the sun to identify the angles of shadows, we see a huge inconsistency, especially when we look at all of the phases of the moon.   The angles don’t match.  We can see a sliver of a moon during the day when the sun is out (and the angle of light to the sun isn’t consistent), and we can see a full moon when the sun is out, both of which cannot be possible.  We can see at night when the sun is on the opposite site of the earth, the moon still goes through its phases of a sliver to full.  This should not be possible to experience both extremes if the moon is in consistent orbit and only reflecting the light of the sun.

Look at this diagram from moonconnection.com and look at the sunlight source.  This pictorial seems to make a ton of sense.  It would appear that when the moon is in front of the earth, we couldn’t see it because the sun would be hitting the moon from its side and thus the moon would be in shadow for us.  Likewise, the moon when it is on the opposite side of the earth, at night, would be mostly full because the sun would be hitting it letting us see it from the back of the earth side (provided that it was a VERY long ways away in order for the shadow of the earth to fully fall off so that the moon could then be relit by the sun.)  However, think about it…. We have full moons visible during the day and waxing crescents sometimes at night, so this wouldn’t make any sense.  How can we have a full moon during the day ever using this diagram?  We’ve all seen it with our own eyes tons of times.  All phases of the moon can be viewed during the day and all phases of the moon can be viewed at night.  I don’t understand how that is possible using the logic that was taught to us.  We are also told that when the moon is behind the earth (blocked from the sun) that it is in lunar eclipse phase and thus shouldn’t even be visible as a full moon (See another video below).

Though these videos for kids seems to make perfect sense of the monthly moon phases, using their same logic, it would never be possible to see a full moon, nor waxing gibbous during the day and it would never make sense to see a slight crescent moon at night; however, we can see with our eyes that both is true.  There are full moons during the day and we’ve all seen crescent moons at night, so this theory proves false.

Then we have another question to ask ourselves?  Why would the moon, then, turn from a cool blue to blood red as it has in the past?  Science tells us that it is a lunar eclipse (see the video below by USA Today), but how is that possible because the moon goes behind the earth during one whole quarter of the year.  When it reaches the full back side of the earth, we were just told this is when the sun hits it in full and gives us the full moon, but now we are told that when it reaches the full back side of the earth, it is in eclipse and is black.  The both cannot be true.  The moon cannot be in full lunar eclipse and full bright moon at the same time.  This doesn’t make sense to me.  The blood moons also do not occur every year, and so are extremely infrequent.

I’m pretty sure the reason for the blood moon, or when it turns red (which occurs on the Jewish Feast Days), it is because God uses the light of the moon to show what is to come.  The Jews understand that when a blood red moon occurs, that this is God’s message to them that a judgement is coming.  It’s a warning to give them time to repent.

“Then God said, “Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons [actual Hebrew meaning:  appointed times], and for days and years;”  Genesis 1:14

  • “the sun shall be turned into darkness, And the moon into blood, Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord.”  Acts 2:20
  • “The sun shall be turned into darkness, And the moon into blood, Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord.”  Joel 2:31
  • ” I looked when He opened the sixth seal, and behold, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became like blood.”  Revelation 6:12

So, all this to say, that perhaps God’s Word is correct in that the moon actually does have its own light source and is not a reflector of the sun.  Maybe the moon could be thought of as partially translucent illuminating a light from the inside that can move about to illuminate parts or all of it.  This would explain why the moon can go through all of its phases no matter if it’s in sunlight or not in sunlight (on the night side of the earth or the day side of the earth) and it could explain why the moon shines cool, blue tone light, and not warm sunlight (with exception to the blood moons.)  And, perhaps, God uses the light within to establish His exact timing of the months, and that the moon is our guide that He uses to send His appointment messages to those who care to research them.  Then, why does there appear to be shadows?  Maybe this light source within the moon only lights portions of it based on His timing within His designated month.  That would make more sense to me since with my own eyes, I can see that the moon doesn’t follow what science has stated about its cycles.

So, is the moon a solid rock or is it a translucent light source as it seems to state in the Bible?  Here’s something to make you go hmmmm…..

July 20, 1969 – Man lands on the moon.  For those who haven’t spent time studying this event, there are many who state that the US gov’t lied about landing on the moon (shocking that our government may have lied, I’m sure).  Many specialists outside of NASA have made claims that it is an impossibility for man to have landed on the moon and they have many documented reasons for this.  Why would they lie about it?  There was a quest to outdo the Russians during this crucial time in history as Russia showed its superiority in sending the first man in in ‘space,’ which is an atmosphere identified as 53-73 miles above the earth’s surface. What are some reasons the moon landing may not have actually occurred?  Some experts have stated:  The inability for any of our current metals to get through our highly radioactive atmosphere without being fried to a crisp, the inability for the Apollo to have been able to land on the moon as it never made a solid test landing on the earth, the lack of rocket engine debris in the supposed moon landing photos, being able to talk to an astronaut clearly when Apollo had fired its landing gear to land on the moon, the American flag flying out straight in a supposed zero atmosphere climate, the additional light sources from the photographs taken that do not match the trajectory of sun rays, fill light to perfectly light astronauts on their walk when no additional light sources were possible, zooming in on the helmets and seeing camera men, the fact that all astronauts are Free Masons which binds them to a society of secrets, why there have been no further trips?, etc.  Not sure what to believe here, but I tend to side with the ‘nay sayers.’

Father God, it is so hard to reconcile science to what your word says.  We are taught one thing and sometimes it appears that your word teaches us something different.  We cannot prove how your moon actually works, what it is made of, and if anyone actually made it there, but we know that somehow you light the moon perfectly to designate your Jewish months which establishes perfectly the feasts that you have designated for them to celebrate and we know that you use your moon for signs of things to come as identified in your word.  Help us to better understand your word and your messages to us so that we don’t miss anything important that you might have to say to us.  We trust you as the creator of all truth and understanding.  In Jesus’ name. Amen.
