Who Is The Male Child?

And a great sign appeared in heaven (word is really: heavens, or the sky): a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. She was pregnant and was crying out in birth pains and the agony of giving birth. And another sign appeared in heaven (the heavens, or the sky): behold, a great red dragon, with seven heads and ten horns, and on his heads seven diadems. His tail swept down a third of the stars of heaven and cast them to the earth. And the dragon stood before the woman who was about to give birth, so that when she bore her child he might devour it. She gave birth to a male child, one who is to rule[a] all the nations with a rod of iron, but her child was caught up to God and to his throne, and the woman fled into the wilderness, where she has a place prepared by God, in which she is to be nourished for 1,260 days.”  Revelation 12:1-6

We have a question that we need to answer in this prophetic passage which will signify the opening of the book of Revelation.  That question, is, “Who is the male child?”  The answer to this is key to our understanding of this text.  In the past, it has been taught by many in the pulpits that the male child is Jesus, Himself, because when Mary gave birth to Him, Satan tried to kill the child, and that Jesus was caught up to God and to His throne.   This doesn’t really seem right to me for a few reasons.

  1. Revelation is a book that was revealed to John in 90 AD by Jesus.  In Revelation 1 we read that this book is for the time of the end, for future events, not to explain prior ones.
  2. When Jesus was born, Herod tried to kill him, but God protected him by sending his parents to Egypt to live until Herod died, but Jesus was not taken back to heaven until after His death, resurrection, and ascension later in the book of Acts.  Jesus did not need to be rescued from the earth.  He willingly laid down His life for us.
  3. When Jesus was born, the nation of Israel did not flee their country.  They stayed there, still living under Roman rule, but were going about normal life.  The nation of Israel is identified as the woman in the Bible.  She did not flee Israel until after 70 AD when the temple was destroyed and the nation taken over (mostly, they left somewhere between 100-125AD after John’s vision).  Individuals then spread out all over the globe living in various countries and not finding a nourishing place prepared for them for 1260 days (3.5 years).  Instead, they were spread out for 1,877 years and returned to their country in 1947-1948.

Let’s look at the literal translation of Rev 12:5:

“And she brought forth a son male who is about to shepherd all the nations with a rod of iron and was caught up the child of her to God and unto the throne of him.”

English translated, “male child”, actual Greek word, “teknon” (ref: 5043), refers to either a male child or a female child, properly, a child; (figuratively) anyone living in full dependence on the heavenly Father, i.e. fully (willingly) relying upon the Lord in glad submission. This prompts God to transform them into His likeness.  It references a child with true, genuine children, begotten from the promise of God.  So, essentially, the “male child” is anyone transformed into His likeness and a true child of God., i.e, true believers in Jesus.

The word “caught up” is the Greek word, “hērpasthē / harpazó ” (ref: 726), means to seize, catch up, snatch away.  properly, seize by force; snatch up, suddenly and decisively – like someone seizing bounty (spoil, a prize); to take by an open display of force (i.e. not covertly or secretly), to seize on, claim for oneself eagerly, proverbial, to rescue from the danger of destruction, used of divine power transferring a person marvelously and swiftly from one place to another. There are 14 occurrences of this word in the NT.

Looking at the passage again, we can see that there is a great sign that appears in the sky with a particular alignment with the moon, sun, and stars, and planets.  This alignment of these objects shows a woman who is pregnant, so she would have another object in her abdomen for 9 months.  At the end of the 9 months, the object shown within the woman comes out as would the birth of a baby.  Prior to the birth of her child, another sign appears in heaven, and this is another object identified as a red dragon.  This object is near the sign of the woman and awaits the birth of the child.  Once the object moves outside of the woman, the red dragon attempts to destroy it, but God rescues it quickly to take it out of the way.  Afterwards, the woman leaves for 3.5 years to be protected by God.

This particular alignment will be displayed in the heavens on September 23, 2017 in its exactness at 6:35 pm, or twilight, the twinkling of an eye, as viewed by the constellations Virgo, the virgin, and Leo, the lion or king.  Many have studied this phenomenon through programs such as Stellarium (which is free to download online). If you have time, check out this alignment for yourself, and make sure to set the location at Jerusalem as the Jews are looking to the skies for this fulfillment.  I also have a free app called, “Sky View” which will show the constellations as well.  This sign has never been displayed throughout all of earth’s history, nor will in the future (as far as 4,000 years in the future or more as this is as far out as anyone has attempted to go.)  Therefor, this Revelation 12 sign is very significant and not to be taken lightly.
