It may be surprising for many of us to know that all miracles are not from God. We assume that only the all-powerful, one true God, can perform miracles, so any time we are witness to them, we believe that God, Himself, did the miracle. Well, not so. We need to be careful in our discernment of which miracles are from God and which of them are from the darkness (aka, evil, or Satan & his demons) used to try to deceive us. We need to do more than just acknowledge the miracle itself, but rather to test where the miracle came from and if it lines up Scripturally with God’s character.
In Exodus, we see Moses approach Pharoah on several occasions to perform miracles to show Pharoah that God is the God of miracles; however, we see that in many of the cases, that Pharoah’s sorcerers and magicians (those empowered by Satan), can do similar miracles, so the miracles by themselves, do not show the presence of God.
“8 Then the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, 9 “When Pharaoh says to you, ‘Prove yourselves by working a miracle,’ then you shall say to Aaron, ‘Take your staff and cast it down before Pharaoh, that it may become a serpent.’” 10 So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and did just as the Lord commanded. Aaron cast down his staff before Pharaoh and his servants, and it became a serpent. 11 Then Pharaoh summoned the wise men and the sorcerers, and they, the magicians of Egypt, also did the same by their secret arts. 12 For each man cast down his staff, and they became serpents. But Aaron’s staff swallowed up their staffs. ” Exodus 7:8-12
Why would this be? God has turned over limited power and abilities to Satan and his demons, temporarily. This includes some powers to perform types of miracles, some ability to manipulate weather, and the ability to manipulate people through planting thoughts into un-perceiving minds.
- “12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. ” Ephesians 6:12
- “…and all nations were deceived by your sorcery.” Revelation 18:23
We need to, therefor, be very careful to test what we see by God’s guidelines. If we do not test, we will be easily deceived, especially during these end times, because as things progress, God will give more power to Satan to be able to sway the opinions of more people, and even those who profess to be Christians.
” Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2 By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, 3 and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already. 4 Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. 5 They are from the world; therefore they speak from the world, and the world listens to them. 6 We are from God. Whoever knows God listens to us; whoever is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of error.” 1 John 4:1-6
I’ve heard of many miracles lately of things that don’t seem of God, such as the miracle of losing weight in an instant, the miracle of growing limbs, the miracle of feathers and dust falling from thin air, and the miracle of being ‘drunk’ by the Holy Spirit and acting out of control. Such things cannot be verified to be of God. For example, God isn’t about external beauty and miraculously losing weight would be something that He wouldn’t seem to support as this inflates pride in the external. Growing limbs aren’t found in the Bible. Being drunk is a sin in the Bible as the Spirit brings self-control and not out of control. Dust and feathers falling from thin air seem more like a magic trick and cannot be verified as something that happened at all in the Bible. So, we need to be very careful to evaluate what is actually happening.
Let’s be careful so that we are not deceived when an even greater worker of miracles comes into the limelight:
“11 Then I saw another beast rising out of the earth. It had two horns like a lamb and it spoke like a dragon. 12 It exercises all the authority of the first beast in its presence,[c] and makes the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast, whose mortal wound was healed. 13 It performs great signs, even making fire come down from heaven to earth in front of people, 14 and by the signs that it is allowed to work in the presence of[d] the beast it deceives those who dwell on earth, telling them to make an image for the beast that was wounded by the sword and yet lived. 15 And it was allowed to give breath to the image of the beast, so that the image of the beast might even speak and might cause those who would not worship the image of the beast to be slain. 16 Also it causes all, both small and great, both rich and poor, both free and slave,[e] to be marked on the right hand or the forehead, 17 so that no one can buy or sell unless he has the mark, that is, the name of the beast or the number of its name. ” Revelation 13:11-17
“14 For they are demonic spirits, performing signs, who go abroad to the kings of the whole world, to assemble them for battle on the great day of God the Almighty.” Revelation 16:14
Father God, help us to rightly determine Your works compared with the works of Satan. Keep us on guard, always watching out for our enemy who wishes to get us off of Your path and onto his. The greatest miracles of them all were performed by You, and though Satan can do some miracles, his works cannot compare to Yours. You are the creator of true miracles. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
