I often find myself asking, “Why is there so much bad in the world?” It can get you down when you listen to the news hearing all of the crime, corruption, pornography, greed, hate, envy, and starving children to name a few. But in spite of that, what we really should be asking is, “Why is there so much good in the world?” Now there’s a question worth exploring.
We can’t deny that there is good in the world. We see it growing alongside the bad…. We see people stepping up to help people in need in various ways. We see people being kind to one another, loving, and caring for them. We see joy and happiness. So, there is obviously some good in the world, but why is that?
There should be no good in the world because Satan (the god of this world) has been cast down to the earth along with his demon followers. The group of them are super great at convincing others to turn away from God by disobeying His rules and following their own selfish ways (They’ve had thousands of years to perfect their tactics!). Plus, they have lots of ways to convince the crowd to go astray through media avenues. They parade as light and so appear to many that their ways are the right ways, but rest assured, their character is always the same…
- “10 The thief [Satan] comes only to steal and kill and destroy. …” John 10:10
- “In their case the god of this world [Satan] has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.” 2 Corinthians 4:4
- “Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. ” 1 Peter 5:8
So, knowing how active Satan and his demons are on this planet prowling (Yep, God has given them temporary partial control of the earth), it’s any wonder there is any good at all. Now, we’ll ask, “Why is there good?”
The answer is, “There is God…”
“And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone.” Mark 10:18
God did something very special in the book of Acts, at Pentecost, just shortly after Jesus died, was raised, and ascended up to heaven. God sent His Holy Spirit into the world to live within believers. For those who trusted their lives into the hands of Jesus for the forgiveness of their sins, God sent a part of Himself to live within each believer as a teacher and helper. He describes it as a light within us. This light radiates God’s goodness into an otherwise dark world.
- “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.” John 14:26
- “14By the Holy Spirit who dwells within us, guard the good deposit entrusted to you.” 2 Timothy 1:14
- ““You [Those who have the Holy Spirit] are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. ” Matthew 5:14
How do we know then that what is good on this earth is from God’s Spirit present within believers on this earth? Well, we can know for certain when we study the end times (which is a time of great deception, turmoil, disaster, and evil) when Satan has been released for all-out war. Right now, Satan has a restrainer in this world, so his powers are limited. He doesn’t have full out access to control everyone, destroy, and devour. What is the restrainer that is holding him back? It’s God’s Holy Spirit present in believers on earth. When God’s Spirit is removed, then Satan will no longer be held back and will plow ahead full force.
“Now concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to him [Greek word: harpazo, which means “to seize, carry off by force. to seize on, claim for one’s self eagerly. to snatch out or away. English word: raptured ], we ask you, brothers, 2 not to be quickly shaken in mind or alarmed, either by a spirit or a spoken word, or a letter seeming to be from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord has come. 3 Let no one deceive you in any way. For that day will not come, unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction, 4 who opposes and exalts himself against every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God. 5 Do you not remember that when I was still with you I told you these things? 6 And you know what is restraining him now so that he may be revealed in his time. 7 For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work. Only he who now restrains it will do so until he is out of the way.” 2 Thessalonians 2:1-7
“16 For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together [Greek word: harpazo, which means “to seize, carry off by force. to seize on, claim for one’s self eagerly. to snatch out or away. English word: raptured ] with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. 18 Therefore encourage one another with these words.” 1 Thessalonians 4:16-18
Father God, Thank you for maintaining some good on this earth by placing Your Holy Spirit within believers to help us and teach us how to live, but also to keep Satan restrained and not able to cause complete damage and chaos. We know that the time is coming soon when Your Spirit will be removed and that Satan will be released to cause turmoil, but thank You, that along with Your Spirit deposit within us, You will also take us with You. What a comfort to know that once Your Spirit resides in us, You are attached and will keep us safe until Your return. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
