“And the four living creatures, each of them with six wings, are full of eyes all around and within, and day and night they never cease to say, “Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come! And whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to him who is seated on the throne, who lives forever and ever,” Revelation 4:8-9
What’s the formula for excellent worship in heaven?
1) Glory + 2) Honor + 3) Thanksgiving
Simple and Vertical
The creatures in heaven surround the throne day and night singing the same beautiful chorus, perhaps in various melodies and harmonies, but nevertheless, a complete attitude of worship. They seek only to sing their praises to Him who sits on the throne showing their gratitude, giving honor, and telling of His glory. Their songs speak nothing of themselves or what they desire. They have no such thoughts, but rather all attention is focused on their creator and object of their affection.
If the creatures closest to God depict true worship, how then would worship cease to be true worship? Worship is not worship when the focus turns from God to ourselves and hence, our focus shifted from God-centered to me-centered… what we need and desire. “Worship” songs which focus on anything other than singing to God about Him is not really worship at all, but rather, testimonies or prayers, which, in itself is good, but it doesn’t qualify as worship.
- “But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” John 4:23-24
God desires for us to worship Him in both spirit (our emotions, feelings, heart, and soul), and truth (our intellect). Though it is claimed that people can worship Him by doing their jobs well, or helping others, or spending time walking in the woods and admiring nature, worship as defined in the Bible is making a conscious, intentional effort to set time aside to completely focus on, and ascribe worth to, Him. Mostly, that is through songs, since songs help us to gain a better focus; afterall, the largest book in the Bible is the book of songs, the Psalms. God must have a heart for music sung to Him.
- “Praise the Lord! Sing to the Lord a new song, his praise in the assembly of the godly!” Psalm 149:1
God desires for you to set aside time to sing to Him and to just reflect on all His amazing attributes.
What’s getting in the way of your worship to Him today?
Father God, Help us to set a side time each day to focus on You, who You are, and what You’ve done so that we can give You the praise that You deserve. In Jesus Name. Amen.
