[Peter said,] “We ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with Him on the holy mountain. And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts,” 1 Peter 1:18-19
What would it be like to hear the audible voice of Lord God Almighty from heaven?
- “The voice of the Lord flashes forth flames of fire. The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness; the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh. The voice of the Lord makes the deer give birth and strips the forests bare, and in his temple all cry, “Glory!” Psalm 29:7-9
If you’re like me, you’ve longed to hear His audible voice shake the earth, but in actuality, if we really heard His voice, my guess is that we would do exactly as the Israelites did when they heard His voice…
- “Now when all the people saw the thunder and the flashes of lightning and the sound of the trumpet and the mountain smoking, the people were afraid and trembled, and they stood far off and said to Moses, “You speak to us, and we will listen; but do not let God speak to us, lest we die.”” Exodus 20:18-19
We would tremble in complete terror and fall down as if dead…
- “When I saw Him [Jesus], I fell at his feet as though dead. But he laid his right hand on me, saying, “Fear not, I am the first and the last,” Revelation 1:17
We desire to experience God’s awesomeness and want to hear His voice so much, but I believe that God knows the fear our hearts would show because of the realization of our unworthiness, so He’s given us a more sure (less scary) word as Peter explains above…
- “…and we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts,” 1 Peter 1:19
God desires for us to not only read His Word, but to study it, meditate on it, and get to know Him in all His fullness. He’s given us an incredible gift… His Living Word which brings about forgiveness, life, and transformation to all those who’s hearts are open to its Truth.
Do you want God to speak to you? Don’t go outside in a thunderstorm, lest you be struck with lightning! But rather, treasure the gift of His Word which bypasses the senses of the ear and goes directly to your heart.
