“Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.” Philippians 2:1-4
Have you felt any encouragement from other Christians? Felt any comfort from Jesus Christ? Found anything at all in common with fellow Christians? Been shown tenderness and compassion maybe when you didn’t deserve it? If at all, you’ve felt any of this to be true, then you are to model the positives of what you’ve been shown.
How will your life feel joyful, complete, and satisfied in the body of Christ, though none are perfect? In Philippians, we find Paul’s recipe for success:
- Focus on the common objectives
- Share the love of Christ
- Continually be filled and renewed with the power of the Holy Spirit
- Value others as better than yourself
- Focus on the betterment of others
- Fulfill the interests of others
No where in this list do we see that we are to worry about our own personal happiness and the pursuit of it. We do not see where we need to make sure our points are heard and that others know when we are right. We do not find where we need to make sure how others know how smart or great we are.
What are we to do?
- “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Matthew 6:33
As long as we seek after meeting the needs of others, we won’t need to worry about our own. This is a backwards message from the world and our own sinful nature says, but can you combat your flesh and live by the Spirit of Christ?
Who’s needs have you help to fulfill this week? Who have you regarded as better than yourself in your actions and attitudes? Who have you shared the love of Christ with?
Lord, it is against our very nature to put others above ourselves. Combat our own nature, Lord, and fill us with the transformation of your Spirit, which will push away this darkness and help us to focus on the betterment of others. Show us daily who we may bless and what we may do or say that will shine your light. In Jesus Name. Amen.
