You Were Darkness

“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord. Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. But everything exposed by the light becomes visible—and everything that is illuminated becomes a light. ”  Ephesians 5:8-13

You were darkness!… Eph 5:8

From Ephesians we read not that we walked in darkness, but that we, ourselves, were darkness, prior to accepting Jesus Christ as our Savior.  It’s a humbling, and almost depressing thought to know that you not only walked in the dark, but that you were darkness to everything around you.  You brought the darkness of sin, decay, and death to the world around you.  You could shine no light to help others.  You had no value to God.  You could do no good.  You were shameful.  You could not please God.  You were visible darkness to all those you came in contact with.

If you’ve come to Jesus, praise be to God for opening your eyes to the light; however, most in this world are still not only living in darkness, but they are darkness.  They are what you once were and many of them will perish as darkness. They will never come to know the light or have the light.  This is why it is so important that we follow the verses as they continue in Ephesians:

  • …Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord. Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. It is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. But everything exposed by the light becomes visible—and everything that is illuminated becomes a light.”  Ephesians 5:8-13

As children of the light, as we do what is pleasing to the Lord, by doing good, practicing righteousness and refraining from sin, lovingly exposing the truth of God’s Word, we are actually illuminating the darkness by bringing our light.  We are shining our light onto the “darkness people” so that they can see the light of the truth, and hopefully transform from darkness to light as we have been so blessed to become.

  • “…God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance…”  Romans 2:4

Father God, Thank you for bringing us from darkness to light.  It is only by your mercy and grace that the truth has been revealed to us.  Lord, we pray for those around us, those whom you put in our paths.  Help us to practice good and righteousness bringing light into the darkness around us so that they too, will come to know your great mercy and kindness.  In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
