From movies and storybooks, we learn that rubbing the genie’s lamp will give us three wishes. Oh how nice that would be to be given the ability to wish for anything and receive it just by asking.
King Solomon was given a ‘genie wish’ by God. God asked him what he would want if he could have anything.
- “At Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon during the night in a dream, and God said, “Ask for whatever you want me to give you.”” 1 Kings 3:5
Oh, what to ask for?!!! Solomon’s mind must have been just spinning through all the potential wishes. Which would be the best to ask for? I would venture to say that if God asked most people, they would wish for fame, fortune, or love. Because Solomon loved God sincerely, as did his father King David, his mind went immediately to how he could better serve His God and serve people…
- “Now, Lord my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father David. But I am only a little child and do not know how to carry out my duties. Your servant is here among the people you have chosen, a great people, too numerous to count or number. So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours?” 1 Kings 3:7-9
Solomon considered the options and chose wisdom above fame, fortune, and love. He wanted to understand more clearly right from wrong, and how to govern justly so that he could help the people in his earthly kingdom.
- “The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for this. So God said to him, “Since you have asked for this and not for long life or wealth for yourself, nor have asked for the death of your enemies but for discernment in administering justice, I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be. Moreover, I will give you what you have not asked for—both wealth and honor—so that in your lifetime you will have no equal among kings. And if you walk in obedience to me and keep my decrees and commands as David your father did, I will give you a long life.” Then Solomon awoke—and he realized it had been a dream.” 1 Kings 3:10-15
- “God gave Solomon wisdom and very great insight, and a breadth of understanding as measureless as the sand on the seashore. Solomon’s wisdom was greater than the wisdom of all the people of the East, and greater than all the wisdom of Egypt.” 1 Kings 4:29-30
Everyone wanted to meet Solomon. His fame spread throughout the land and many came to him for his wise counsel. God had not only granted his wish of increasing his wisdom, but God also blessed Solomon like no other man on the face of the earth with extensive material wealth, fame, and love. How will this work out for Solomon? We’ll continue to explore this in another devotional, but for now….
If God would grant you one wish, what would you wish for? Be careful to choose wisely!
Father God, Thank you for granting us the wish of eternal life through your Son, Jesus Christ. This is one wish that we all share in common because we don’t want to die and we want to never be separated from you. If you never grant us another wish, we thank you that you already granted this deepest wish within all o us. In Jesus Name. Amen.
