Repressing Instincts

Do you ever wonder why people all over the world attempt to do good and keep the commandments, even when they do not have Jesus in their lives and may have not even heard of the Bible?  It wouldn’t seem to make sense that they would, given the sinful nature of all humans; however, we read in Romans that God has actually written His laws on the hearts of every human being, even those who would never come to know Him.  Every human basically knows the difference between right and wrong in their conscience. Their conscience convicts them when they do wrong and acts as a form of constraint keeping them from total disobedience and wickedness.  (Yes, some have chosen to repress and even silence this conviction allowing the enemy to hide the truth from them.. a very dangerous spot to be in!)  Many civil laws of the land are also based on the commandments, so the government upholds many of God’s laws as well.

  • “Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law. They show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts sometimes accusing them and at other times even defending them. This will take place on the day when God judges people’s secrets through Jesus Christ, as my gospel declares.”  Romans 2:14-16

Because of the law written on the hearts of every human being, and because of the plainness that creation screams a designer, there is no excuse for those who claim there is no God.  “Oh, I couldn’t tell there was a God. There was no proof. I totally didn’t have a clue!,” will not be a valid argument for God.

  • “since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.”  Romans 1:19-20

For those who repress the laws written on their hearts, at some point, God removes the constraints and allows their full sinfulness to overtake them, giving them over to what they believe will make them happy… the sinful desires of their hearts… also a very dangerous spot to be in, not only for the person given over, but to those in their sphere of influence.

  • “Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done. They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy. Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.”  Romans 1:28-31

Are you convicted of any wrong in your life?  If so, that’s a good sign that God has not totally given you over yet.  Our God is a loving and patient God, willing to forgive and restore.  We need only confess those areas of our lives that have fallen to sin, turn over our trust to Jesus Christ as our payment for sin, and follow Him as best as we can with the help of His Holy Spirit.

Don’t wait to give your life to Jesus.  Tomorrow, you might not have a chance.

  • “We have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original conviction firmly to the very end. As has just been said: “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion.”  Hebrews 3:14-15

Father God, Thank you that you have not hidden yourself from your creation.  You have revealed a glorious creation where we can see your fingerprints and your heart.  Thank you also for writing your laws on our hearts, giving us a moral guide and restraints for our sinfulness.  We pray for those who do not yet know where the source of these laws come from, that they might seek to know you.  In Jesus’ Name.  Amen.
