Since the fall, God has always been slightly removed from humankind, intentionally. He cannot fully dwell side by side with humans as our sinful nature will cause Him to exercise His judgement. Because He loves us though, He has established boundaries and limits so that we are not totally separated from Him and He can still interact with us. For example, in Exodus, God would come down to the top of a mountain to reveal His glory; however, He would establish boundaries and limits only allowing the people to watch at a distance.
- “Put limits for the people around the mountain and tell them, ‘Be careful that you do not approach the mountain or touch the foot of it. Whoever touches the mountain is to be put to death.” Exodus 19:12
Even with His own prophets, they were also to keep a slight distance, including the great prophet and leader Moses:
- ““Do not come any closer,” God said. “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.” Exodus 3:5
The boundaries of God carry forward through the establishment of the tabernacle, the temple, and the heavenly throne room of God…. These all show God wanting to interact with His people, wanting to be near, but always at a slight distance. Through the saving power of His Son, Jesus Christ, we now have access to the throne room of God through prayer; however, we are still kept at a distance from the full presence of God. Not one human is allowed to experience the fullness of God in this lifetime.. Near, but not quite here.
- ““The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!”” Mark 1:15
Though for the time being, God must remain somewhat separated from His sinful creation, there will be a day when God, Himself, comes down from heaven, in all His fullness and dwells among men forever. This is when all judgement have been executed, all sin removed, and the children of God are fully cleansed and ready to just love and worship their Lord. This will be a glorious day that all believers long for… to be in the full presence of their Lord forever and ever. Amen.
- “And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. ” Revelation 21:3
God is near now. God will be here then.
Glory to God forever!
