“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.” 1 Peter 1:3-5
A few years back, a friend of mine lost both his mother and father within a short period of time, survived by five brothers and sisters. What happened next was tragic and is all too frequent among siblings. The brothers and sisters began to argue over the inheritance and through much anguish, even to this day, many of the siblings still do not speak to each other. What were they fighting about? Items such as a boat, household items, money, and other perishable things. The perishable inheritance was more important to them then their relationships with each other, and so their strained relationships may continue for the rest of their lives.
Earthly inheritances rot, decay, and eventually disappear…
- “Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Luke 12:33-34
Your heavenly inheritance, in contrast, can never rot, decay, or disappear. Each believer receives his/her perfect inheritance, not be be desired, debated or stolen from others. This inheritance is personal and loving and of more value than anything this earth can provide. God guarantees, by His power, that your inheritance is secure.
- ““Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.” John 14:1-3
Heavenly Father, Thank you that you care so much about us that you have promised us good things in heaven, a specific inheritance just for us. Help us to let go of those items now which will decay and fade and help us to store up treasures in heaven by lovingly serving you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
