” Ever since the time of your ancestors you have turned away from my decrees and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you,” says the Lord Almighty. “But you ask, ‘How are we to return?’ “Will a mere mortal rob God? Yet you rob me. “But you ask, ‘How are we robbing you?’ “In tithes and offerings. You are under a curse—your whole nation—because you are robbing me. Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it. I will prevent pests from devouring your crops, and the vines in your fields will not drop their fruit before it is ripe,” says the Lord Almighty. “Then all the nations will call you blessed, for yours will be a delightful land,” says the Lord Almighty.” Malachi 3:7-12
- “A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.” Proverbs 11:25
God cannot get our 2nd best. He deserves the 1st in all things. And, since all things are rightfully His, He has asked for us to willingly return the first 1/10th of all things we receive to Him. It is the first 1/10th that is blessed by God. Where ever we give this first 1/10th, is where we are choosing to worship. So, if you give the first 1/10th to your mortgage company, you are worshiping the mortgage company. If you choose to buy groceries, you are choosing to worship food. If you choose to give it to the Lord’s house, you are choosing to worship Him. The choice is yours, but there are rewards and consequences associated with your choice.
- “The first of the first fruits of your land you shall bring into the house of the Lord your God.” Exodus 23:19
Before the blessing, comes the act of faith, but it must be out of a generous, willing heart.
- “As soon as the order went out, the Israelites generously gave the first fruits of their grain, new wine, olive oil and honey and all that the fields produced. They brought a great amount, a tithe of everything. The people of Israel and Judah who lived in the towns of Judah also brought a tithe of their herds and flocks and a tithe of the holy things dedicated to the Lord their God, and they piled them in heaps.” 2 Chronicles 31:5-6
From Malachi 3 (above), those who obey God and put Him first in everything, will live under the blessings of God. If we choose to not give back His rightful 1/10th, then God is not obligated to fulfill His end of the deal either. So, which will you choose?
