Forgetting What You Look Like

“Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.”  James 1:22-25

It’s silly to think of the concept of getting up in the morning, going into the bathroom, and fixing our hair and makeup in the mirror, being careful that we look good for our day at work.  By the time we drive to work and walk into the office, we go into a meeting.  A co-worker is talking about marketing to those who have blonde hair and blue eyes and you somehow become lost in thought considering what that might look like, completely oblivious to the fact that you are the one who they want to market to… you have blonde hair and blue eyes but cannot even remember that.  It doesn’t even seem possible to consider this scenario.  Of course we remember what we look like…. what a silly thing to say!

It’s a silly thing for those who read God’s Word and then don’t do what it says.  God says it is as silly as looking into a mirror and forgetting what you look like a few minutes later.  God’s Word is meant to penetrate into our minds and souls, transforming us into the very likeness of Christ.  Being intentional about reading and spending time thinking about what is being said and then trying to do what is says is seeing yourself and knowing yourself for who God created you to be.

  • “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”  Romans 12:2

Father God, help us to be intentional about getting into your Word every day.  Speak to us through your Word, convicting our hearts so that we can be transformed.  Help us to obey you.  In Jesus Name.  Amen.
