“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also…“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” Matthew 6:19-21,24
What do you value?
Keeping up with the Jones’ can be grueling task, but is sought after by many. We want to keep current with what our neighbors have because they seem so happy with these things. Everything needs to be at least as good, or better yet, much better than theirs…. Our lawns, our boat, our SUVs, our furniture, our large screen tvs, our lasted Apple products, our fashionable clothing, and our vacations.
God tells us that all the things that we buy to keep up with the Jones’ will be eaten or taken by either:
- Moths – Nocturnal flying insects that destroy in the dark of the night. Their larvae eat and destroy fabric, crops, and forests. They can cause issues with human health.
- Vermin – Wild mammals and birds which are harmful to crops destroying them by disease, or parasitic worms or insects.
- Thieves – Break into another person’s property, usually without knowledge, and take their belongings to keep as their own or sell to make money. Usually, thieves damage property left behind.
What value are things that can be so easily destroyed and/or taken? Not much. Instead, God asks us to store up treasures in heaven which can never be taken from us, destroyed, or damaged in any way. These seem like much better investments!
How do you store up treasures in heaven?
- Reading (God’s Word)
These are permanent investments that will show greater, lasting value.
