The Lion, The Lamb Together

When God created the universe, it was in perfect peace and harmony.  There was no sickness, no death, and no decay for sin had not yet come into existence.  Animals lived side by side alongside humans, none in fear of the other, as all were vegetarians.

  • “Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.” And it was so.”  Genesis 1:29-30

I love animals, well actually, just furry animals.  The ones I love the most are the most dangerous to us today – lions, tigers, and bears, oh my!  I long to snuggle with them.  Lions are my absolute favorite!  They are referenced 119 times in the Bible.  They must have been a prominent beast throughout Bible times striking fear and awe with their power.  Thinking about God’s original intent with creation, I imagine how Adam and Eve were able to play and snuggle with these ferocious beasts just as if they were harmless puppies.  Jealous!

Adam and Eve brought sin into the world, and rather than it being subdued and contained, it ran rampant, like wild devouring beasts, through most of those on the face of the earth.  God became sad, angry, and weary of all the disobedience and so sent the flood to kill off every living creature that was not protected by the ark that Noah had built.  The flood changed things.  From this point forward, God would have beast against beast, beast against man, and man against beast.

  • “Then God blessed Noah and his sons, saying to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth. The fear and dread of you will fall on all the beasts of the earth, and on all the birds in the sky, on every creature that moves along the ground, and on all the fish in the sea; they are given into your hands. Everything that lives and moves about will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything.”  Genesis 9:1-3

One day, Jesus will come to restore all things and, I believe, at that time, He will restore the broken relationships between His creation.  I long for that day when all is restored and the lion, lamb, human, and God are all in perfect alignment….  Yes, and I can’t wait to pet one of God’s most awesome creations…. the king of the jungle… the lion.

  • “The wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the goat, the calf and the lion and the yearling together; and a little child will lead them.  The cow will feed with the bear, their young will lie down together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox.”  Isaiah 11:6-7
  • “The wolf and the lamb will feed together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox, and dust will be the serpent’s food. They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain,” says the Lord.” Isaiah 65:25

Jesus is both our strong lion and our gentle & sacrificial lamb.

  • “Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He [Jesus] is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.””  Revelation 5:5 [Jesus is the only one worthy to reveal the final plans of God.]
  • “The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!”  John 1:29  [Jesus is the only one pure, holy, an unblemished to provide a perfect sacrifice for our sins.]

When at last, everything is finally restored…

  • “Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. No longer will there be any curse. The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve him.”  Revelation 22:1-3

Hallelujah!  Praise be to God for His restoration is coming!
