“Then Moses went up to the mountain, and the cloud covered the mountain. The glory of the Lord rested on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it for six days, and on the seventh day He called to Moses from the midst of the cloud. And to the eyes of the sons of Israel the appearance of the glory of the Lord was like a consuming fire on the mountain top. Moses entered the midst of the cloud as he went up to the mountain, and Moses was on the mountain for 40 days and 40 nights.” Exodus 24:15-18
God used Moses in very profound ways. In this occurrence, God has called Moses up to the mountain to give him specific instructions.
- “Now the Lord said to Moses, “Come up to Me on the mountain and remain there, and I will give you the stone tablets with the law, and the commandment which I have written for their instruction.” Exodus 24:12
Moses starts his journey as his friends and family watch him climb out of site. When he arrives on the mountain, where is God? From the verses in Exodus 24, we understand that when Moses arrives, he waits 6 days before the Lord finally speaks to him on the 7th day. This strikes me as a bit odd. What was going through the mind of Moses during these 6 days… “Lord, Hel-lo, where are you?” “You called me up here and why aren’t you here?” “Are you hiding?” “Did I do something wrong?” “Why aren’t you speaking to me?” “Did you leave me?” “I did what you said. You’re not doing what you said.” “Maybe I heard you wrong.” “I think I’ll go back home to my life.” Or maybe Moses used this time to cry out in prayer for his people, asking for their forgiveness and healing. Maybe he was confessing his own sins and feeling his unworthiness of this call.
Regardless of what he was feeling, Moses stayed on the mountain, for probably what seemed like a lifetime, realizing that if he left too early to go back down the mountain, he would have nothing to share with the people. This would also not be good for his own integrity.
Moses waited for God’s perfect timing. We don’t know what God was doing for 6 days, but He obviously was using it to prepare Moses to receive His messages. On the 7th day through the 40th day, God provided Moses with not only the 10 Commandments for His people, but also the full instructions for offerings & sacrifices, the religious ordinances, the social laws, the feasts, the full instructions of the building of the tabernacle and the specific garments for the priests. This would be the most inclusive instructions ever provided to a man. And, while the instructions were going on, the mountain looked like a flame of fire, as was witnessed by God’s people at its base. So, the people marveled at God during the remaining 34 days.
God’s timing is hardly ever our timing. We wish it were, but it’s not. God has greater plans than our minds can even comprehend. If you feel like you are in a waiting period, hang on and wait. If you give up too early, God’s blessing may be forfeited. Wait patiently. God will not let you down.
