Are Dinosaurs in the Bible?

Simple answer… Yes.  Dinosaurs were in the Bible.

Many people don’t believe in the literal creation of 6 days and that the earth is less than 10,000 years old.  The reason why most don’t is because they cannot reconcile what science tries to explain (the millions of year thing) and what the Bible says.  Most haven’t taken the time to find dinosaurs in the Bible to prove the fact that man and dinosaur roamed the earth at the exact same time.

Science has proven that dinosaurs existed on the earth.  Fossils have been found all over the world.  Their bones have been reconstructed into skeletons on display in museums for all to see.  So where did they come from and when did they live?  What happened to them?  Why aren’t they here today?

The word, “Dinosaur” came about in the 1820’s when Gineon Mantell, and English doctor, found some unusual teeth and bones.  After much research, he discovered these bones were from an entirely new group of reptiles.  He coined the name, “Dinosauria,” literally meaning “terrible lizard.”

What makes dinosaurs different from other reptiles?  Many dinosaurs had fully erect postures making them similar to mammals.  Where other reptiles would crawl and slither, these reptiles would walk on either all fours or their rear limbs.  Some were as small or smaller than chickens, but some weighed an estimated 80 tons and stood 40 feet high.

Evolutionist scientists says that dinosaurs lived about 140 – 65 million years ago; however, if you believe the Bible, you’ll see that is far from the truth.  Science cannot exactly prove when they were here or when they died.  Evolutionist scientists find fossils and guess as to the time frame based on an ‘evolutionary scientific theory’ (or basically, what they think is correct).  Creation scientists have a different view.  They believe that dinosaurs can be proven to exist in Bible times and be part of God’s creation at the beginning of the world.

Genesis teaches us many things about how the universe and life came into existence.  God created everything, the earth, sun, stars, moon, plants, water, animals, and people.  He created all of this in SIX literal days and rested on the seventh (See my previous blog post on the 6 Days of Creation).  Bible scholars will tell you that the Hebrew word for DAY used in Genesis 1 can ONLY mean an ordinary 24 hour day.  If you study the genealogy of Jesus Christ, you will not be able to go back millions of years to the book of Genesis, but rather only thousands.  From today, it is estimated that the earth is only a little over 6,000 years old.  So, if the Bible is correct (and I believe it is), dinosaurs must have existed within the past 6,000 years.

Evolutionists claim that dinosaurs evolved over millions of years.  They imagine that one kind of animal slowly changed into another type over long periods of time.  For example, they believe that amphibians (like a frog), gradually changed into a dinosaur.  So, using that theory, at any given time in history, there should be millions of types of ‘creatures’ in transition.  Evidence for these ‘transitional forms’ should be abundant at any time in history, including today; however, fossil experts admit that they cannot identify even one transitional form.  They have not found one skeleton that is part one animal and part another.  If you go to any museum, all dinosaur skeletons are just that, dinosaurs, not something in between.  100% dinosaur.

The Bible tells us that God created all land animals on the SIXTH day of creation.  Dinosaurs were land animals, so they must have been created during this same day, right along side Adam and Eve who were also created on the sixth day (Gen 1:24-31).  Evolutionists state that it was not possible for man to live along side of dinosaurs.  The Bible; however, makes it plain that they did in face live together.

Dinosaurs, along with all of the original animals (and humans) were commanded to be vegetarian (Genesis 1:29-30).  There were no meat eaters in the original creation.  And, there was no death.  If Adam and Eve would not have sinned, animals and humans would have continued to live in harmony eating only plants.  However, sin was brought into the word (Genesis 3:1-7 & Romans 5:12) and thus we all gave up our rights to live in a holy, perfect world.  God’s judgment on sin was death.  So, in Bible terms there would have been no fossils prior to Adam & Eve’s sin because death did not exist (Consider: Romans 5:12, Gen 2:17, Gen 1:29-30, Rom 8:20-22, Acts 3:21, Heb 9:22, 1 Cor 15, Rev 21:1-4, Rev 22:3).  After Adam & Eve’s sin, animals and people started to die.  It was a different world now, one of death and of strife.  We don’t know for sure if animals and people began killing each other at the point; however, we do know that the Bible describes the world as ‘wicked.’

The world became so wicked, that God commanded a flood over all the earth to kill most everything (Genesis 6:13).   Approximately 4,500 years ago, God saved only Noah, his family, and every land animals (2 of some, and 7 of some) on an ark (Gen 6:14-20).  Some people think that the dinosaurs were too big, or there were too many of them to go on the ark; however, it has been proven that there weren’t that many types of dinosaurs.  For example, there are many varieties and sizes of dogs, but they are all dogs.  In reality, there may have been fewer than 50 kinds of dinosaurs.  So, therefore, dinosaurs must have been on the ark.  The animals, and the rest of mankind, who weren’t on the ark, drowned.  Many of them would have been covered with tons of mud as the rampaging water covered the land (Gen 7:11-12, 19).  Because of this quick burial, many of the animals would have been preserved as fossils. You would expect to find evidence of billions of dead things buried in rock layers (formed by mud) all over the earth.  This is exactly what you find.  The earth settled after the flood, hardened, and the fossils were formed in these layers.

Dinosaurs must have come off of the ark, because Job (a descendant of Noah) was familiar with them (Job 40:15-24).  God describes to Job a great beast called “behemoth.”  This beast is described as ‘the chief of the ways of God.’  It was perhaps the largest animal God had ever created.  Impressively, the beast moved his tail like a cedar tree. The benemoth would be what we now describe as a brontosaurus.

“Behold now, Behemoth (Leviathan), which I made as well as you; He eats grass like an ox.  Behold now, his strength in his loins, And his power in the muscles of his belly. He bends his tail like a cedar; The sinews of his thighs are knit together. His bones are tubes of bronze; His limbs are like bars of iron.”    (Job 40:15–18)

Some commentaries say that this animal as described in Job must have been an elephant or hippo; however, the actual description fits that of a dinosaur like brontosaurus.  Read it for yourself!  Elephants and hippos certainly do not have tails as large as cedar trees.  Few animals in the Bible are singled out with such a detailed description.  Dinosaurs get more mention in the Scriptures than most animals.  The word “dragon” is used a number of times in the Old Testament.  In most instances, the word dinosaur could substitute for dragon.  Creation scientists believe that dinosaurs (term defined in the 1820’s) were originally called dragons.  In many very old history books around the world, there are detailed records of encounters with dragons.

Why don’t we see dinosaurs today?  Evolutionists have many theories:  starvation, overeating, poisoned, blind, ate their own eggs, comets, sunspots, meteorites, mass suicide, parasites, shrinking brain, and more.  It’s obvious they don’t know what really happened.  The Bible does have an explanation of their extinction that makes more sense.  At the time of the flood, many of the sea creatures died and most of the land animals died, but a small representative of each species survived on the ark.  These animals lived in the new world after the flood.  This new world was much different than before the flood.  They experienced:  a decrease in the food supply, natural catastrophes, man killing for food, and destruction of their habitats.  Many species of animals eventually died out.  Dinosaurs must have been with those who died out.  In fact, quite a number of animals continue to become extinct each year.  Extinction seems to be the norm in earth’s history – as opposed to the formation of new types of animals.
